How slow is slow enough?

Chrome and walnut metronome with a glowing amber tempo dial

Most beginners practise about 40 BPM too fast. At speed you can hide sloppy timing behind momentum; slowed down, every early or late note is exposed.

Set the Tempo Room to 40 BPM and play a single stroke roll in quarter notes. Long gaps between hits are where control is built.

Only raise the tempo in steps of 5 BPM, and only after three clean passes. It feels slow, but you will pass your old speed inside a couple of weeks.

In Practice Lab, use the Note rate control: Quarter is one hit per click, Eighth is two, 16th is four. Novices should stay on Quarter until the hands feel automatic.
